Our Vegas Trip - Day One

Jerry, Toby and I flew to Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday, July 13, 2005. We flew Air Trans and ended up at the very back of the plane. Toby and I on one side, with no window and Jerry across the aisle with two other people and no window.

It was a full flight and the flight attendant at the back was busy trying to make sure people traveling together were seated together so she kept changing Jerry's row mates. We were probably 30 minutes into the flight and she decided that since Jerry ended up in that back row alone she needed to move him up a few rows so she could seat a mom, dad and baby in the back row...a fussy baby I might add. I have never been on a flight where the flight attendants played musical seats so much!

We were flying in early for the Bereaved Parents of the USA Conference and had decided we would come in early since Toby and I had never been to Vegas before this. Jerry had been to Vegas in the 80's. A lot has changed since then.

We stayed at the Imperial Palace because that is where the conference was to be held this year. Last year we stayed at a different hotel than where the conference was held and we decided against it this year. I enjoy being able to return to our room between workshops and before dinner. Since Jerry doesn't attend the sessions it is nice to come back to the room and just touch base periodically.

We arrived in Las Vegas on Wednesday about noon. It was already 110 degrees Farenheit. And of course you have to hear the whole time it is a "dry" heat. Well, I have to tell you that I will take my Dallas heat!!!

I doubt I will make that trip again. Neither Jerry nor I gamble and we never did put any money down at any of the tables or in the slot machines. We both had thought about it but neither of us went that far.

After we finally retrieved our luggage we headed for the taxi stand and caught a taxi right away, thank goodness. The driver took us straight to the hotel and we got checked in right away. Jerry had been reading how you have to tell the taxi driver you have been to Vegas before otherwise they will take you on the 30 minute scenic route just to get to the strip which is only ten minutes away.

Since Toby had decided last minute he was coming with us Jerry had me call the hotel and change our reservations from a double to a King Suite. We got one on the 17th floor of the hotel. The living area has a wet bar in it. The bedroom has a king bed with mirrors above the bed, and a HUGE garden tub across the room with mirrors all over it also.

We got a roll away bed for Toby and got a refrigerator also. We were set for the next five days.

After settling in we decided to walk around a little. We didn't go far. We found a place to get lunch and then headed back to the hotel soon after. It was pretty hot to be walking around out there during the heat of the day.

I was under the impression since I did grow up in the desert it does cool off at night but it doesn't in Las Vegas! The sun would reflect off that concrete and it made it pretty miserable. I guess there really is no good time to walk the strip in the middle of summer. There were so many foreigners there that I was surprised first of all that this was a spot they would want to come to and then to think they were no where used to this kind of weather back home.
