Our Charleston Trip - Day Four Middleton Place |
Jerry, Toby and I left the hotel after
breakfast and made our way to Middleton Place, which consists of a total of
110 acres. Today the grounds, stables and house sit on 65 acres.
Middleton Place is now a National Historic Landmark and was first settled in the late 17th century and aquired by Henry Middleton through marriage in 1741. Four successive generations of Middletons lived here. They included, Henry who was a President of the First Continental Congress; Arthur, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence; a second Henry, Governor of South Carolina and minister to Russia; and Williams, who signed the Ordinance of Secession five years before the Civil War engulfed Middleton Place and brought the sudden end in 1865.
This is America's oldest landscaped Gardens that were laid out in 1741. The gardens were overgrown and neglected following the Civil War and the Great Earthquake of 1886. Early in the 20th century a direct descendant of Henry Middleton, J.J. Pringle Smith inherited the plantation and with his wife spent many years restoring and enhancing the gardens.
We took the carriage-ride through the grounds, stables and saw the outlying buildings. Once finished with the carriage-ride we walked the grounds before heading to Drayton Hall which is a few miles down the road.
